Chapter 8: Reactivity Trends Flashcards
Trend in halogen mtp
It increases down the group because more electrons so stronger London forces so more energy required to break intermolecular forces
Group 7 elements
They are oxidising agents because they themselves get reduced and oxide another species
Cl2 and water/ cyclohexane
Pale green
Br2 and water/ cyclohexane
Orange
I2 and water
Brown
I2 and cyclohexane
Violet
Trends in reactivity
Reactivity decreases down the group. The atomic radius increases because more inner shells so shielding increases. Less nuclear attraction to capture electron from another species
Group 2 elements
They are reducing agents because they themselves get oxidised and reduce the other species
Group 2 elements and oxygen
Metal+oxygen ~ metal oxide
Mg burns in oxygen with a bright white flame to form MgO
Trend down group 2
Reactivity increases because the ionisation energy required to remove two electrons is greater down the group
Metal + acid
= salt + hydrogen
They react more vigorously down the group
Metal + water
= alkaline metal hydroxide + hydrogen
The reactivity of the reactions down the groups get more vigorous
Group 2 compounds in agriculture
Ca(OH)2 is added to fields as lime by farmers to increase the pH of acidic soil. The calcium hydroxide neutralises the soil forming water
What is the periodic table?
It is an arrangement of elements in increasing atomic number
Group 2 compounds in medicine
Used as antacids for treating acid indigestion
Tablets of magnesium or calcium carbonate or magnesium hydroxide suspension
