Chapter 8: Reactivity Trends Flashcards

1
Q

Trend in halogen mtp

A

It increases down the group because more electrons so stronger London forces so more energy required to break intermolecular forces

2
Q

Group 7 elements

A

They are oxidising agents because they themselves get reduced and oxide another species

Q

Trends in reactivity

A

Reactivity decreases down the group. The atomic radius increases because more inner shells so shielding increases. Less nuclear attraction to capture electron from another species

Q

Group 2 elements and oxygen

A

Metal+oxygen ~ metal oxide

Mg burns in oxygen with a bright white flame to form MgO

Q

Trend down group 2

A

Reactivity increases because the ionisation energy required to remove two electrons is greater down the group

Q

Metal + water

A

= alkaline metal hydroxide + hydrogen

The reactivity of the reactions down the groups get more vigorous

Q

Group 2 compounds in agriculture

A

Ca(OH)2 is added to fields as lime by farmers to increase the pH of acidic soil. The calcium hydroxide neutralises the soil forming water

16
Q

Chlorine benefits

A

Ensures our water is drinkable by killing bacteria

Used to purify water after natural disasters

17
Q

Disproportionation

A

A redox reaction in which the same element is both oxidised and reduced i.e chlorine with water

18
Q

Group 2 reactions with water

A

The oxides of group 2 elements text with water releasing hydroxide ions to form alkaline solutions of metal hydroxides
The solubility of them increases down the group because there are more OH- ions `

19
Q

Chlorine risks

A

Extremely toxic gas
Respiratory irritant
Chlorinate hydrocarbons are suspected to cause cancer
