Chapter 6: Shapes of molecules and intermolecular forces Flashcards
Electronegativity
A measure of attraction of a bonded atom for the pair of electrons in a covalent bond
Trend of electronegativity across the periodic table
Nuclear charge increases
Atomic radius increases
A non-polar bond
The bonded electron is shared equally between the bonded atoms
(This bond forms when the bonded atoms are the same or have similar electronegativity)
Polar bonds
The bonded electron pair is shared unequally between the bonded atoms
Dipole
Separation of opposite charges-
Intermolecular forces
Are weak interactions between dipoles of different molecules
London forces
Are weak intermolecular forces that exist between all molecules
An instantaneous dipole is induced
Permanent dipole -dipole interactions
Act between the permanent dipole in different polar molecules
Simple molecular substance?
Is made up of simple molecules which are held by weak intermolecular forces
Hydrogen bonds
A special tour of permanent dipole-dipole interaction found between molecules
