Chapter 8 Qualitative Methods Flashcards
Researchers try to see things as they happen without distributing participants but the researchers presence might change how people respond in the situation
Complete Observation
“Undercover.” Pretends to be one of the subjects to gain entry to otherwise inaccessible settings. research kept secret
Covert participation
the study of a culture that some group of people share, using participant observation over a long period of time to immerse him/herself in that culture . “Tell it like it is”
Ethnography
Notes that describe what has been observed, heard, or experienced in a participant observation study
Field notes
Involves unstructured group interviews in which the researcher actively encourages discussion among participants on the research topic (Typically 7-10 people)
Focus groups
To completely adopt the lifestyle or outlook of the subjects; losing objectivity in the process
Going native
Involves open-ended, relatively unstructured questioning to collect in-depth information on feelings, experiences, and perceptions
Intensive interviewing
Brief notes written down quickly during the observation period
Jotting
Involves developing a sustained relationship with people while they go about their normal activities
Participation observation
Complete observation, Participant & observation, and Covert participation
3 roles of participant observation
when new interviews seem to gain little additional background
Saturation point
Researchers develop a standard form on which to record variation in the observed setting focused on the variables of interest
Systematic observation
a sample drawn in a sequential fashion with settings/individuals selected for study when earlier settings/individuals indicate the new ones are influential
