Chapter 7 Survey Research Flashcards
Mailed survey, group survey, Phone survey, In-person interview, and Electronic survey
5 Survey Designs
Common in survey research, respondents are more likely to answer, easy to process and statistically analyze, information is surface-level, may obscure what people really think if the response options don’t reflect the true range of choices
Closed ended questions
questions that ask more than one question at the same time (ex: have you ever used cocaine or know anyone that has used cocaine?)
Double barreled question
a question that contains 2 negatives which makes it hard to interpret (never, nothing, no one, cannot)
Double negative question
The range of choices should cover all possible options
Exhaustive responses
established whether upcoming questions apply to the respondent
Filter questions
floaters are people who provide an opinion on a topic they know nothing about
Floating
Can be constructed by combining the answers to multiple questions into 1 composite measure because we want as much information as possible
Index (or scale)
survey responses that indicate the extent to which the person agrees or disagrees with a statement
Likert-type questions
surveys that are conducted using more than 1 method, allows the strengths of 1 survey design to compensate for the weaknesses of another
Mixed-mode surveys
a survey that covers a range of topics of interest to different social scientists
Omnibus survey
used when there’s very little information on that topic, can provide a ton of information but are hard to statistically analyze, facilitates more detailed answers, can lessen confusion about the meaning of responses with complex concepts or when multiple answers might apply
Open-ended questions
the severe instrument containing the questions for a self-administered survey
Questionnaire
involves a collection of information from a sample of individuals through their responses to questions
