Chapter 8 part 2 Flashcards
what are flashbulb memories?
memories regarding the first time you HEARD about a shocking event
what is special about flashbulb memories?
-> they are more resistant to fading than other memories around that time
what is the narrative rehearsal hypothesis?
-> hearing repeatedly about an event and mistaking it for a memory
what are phantom flashbulbs?
-> false flashbulbs, story changes compared to the first time you recalled it
what are two possible explanations of phantom flashbulbs?
-> tv priority: mistaking tv viewing as a real memory of the event
-> time slice errors: remembering the wrong time frame, not remembering the first time correctly
what is a source monitoring error?
-> incorrectly recalling where you got information from
what is transience?
-> when memory fades over time
what is absentmindedness?
-> forgetfullness, inattention
what is blocking?
-> failure to retrieve information from LTM
what is missattribution?
-> when memory is attributed to the wrong source
what is suggestibility?
false information leading to a false recollection
what is bias?
influences a person’s memory (values, beliefs, etc.) as they are subjective
what is persistence?
-> unwanted recall of a memory you wish you could forget
what is deva ju?
(already seen) -> feeling as though you’ve experienced something before
what is deja vecu?
(already lived) -> persisting deja vu, feeling like you relive the same day
what is jamais vu?
(never seen) -> not recognizing that you’ve experienced something before
what is a pragmatic inference?
-> interring information based on prior knowledge and experiences
what is a scheme vs script?
scheme -> what typically is found at a scene
script -> sequence of actions that typically occur in an experience/scene
define own-race bias?
were more likely to recognize faces of people from our own race
what is unconscious transferrence?
-> failure to distinguish between a familiar face and the target face
who is an example of unconscious transferrence?
-> howard hopt, he was familiar so people assumed he must’ve been the culprit
what is photo bias?
-> there is an increased probability of recognition based on previous exposure
what is the misinformation effect?
-> when information prevented after the event influences memory of the event
what is the memory trace replacement view?
-> memory is overwritten/altered by suggested information
