Chapter 6 - Long Term Memory Structure Flashcards
what is Korsakoff’s syndrome?
-> the inability to form new long term memories
what does the serial position curve show?
-> that you are less likely to remember words in the middle of a list compared to those at the beginning and end
what is the primacy effect?
-> the idea that memory is better for stimuli presented at the beginning or first
what is the recency effect?
-> the idea that memory is better for stimuli presented at the end
what is stronger, the primacy effect or the recency effect? why?
-> recency effect, because that information is most likely still in short term memory (30s)
what is explicit vs implicit memory?
-> explicit = conscious
-> implicit = unconscious
what is episodic vs semantic memory?
-> episodic = personal events
-> semantic = facts and general knowledge
what is the downside of episodic memory?
-> it involves mental time travel and may not be accurate
what are the three levels of the remember-know method?
- remember the event and when they learned of it
- remember the event but not when they learned it
- no memory of either
what level in the remember-know task was most common? what does this show?
-> remembering the event but not when they learned it
(shows that episodic memory fades but semantic stays intact)
what type of memory is required to think about your own future?
-> episodic and semantic memory
what is positive priming?
-> when previous exposure to a stimulus speeds up or facilitates processing of a related stimulus (increases speed and accuracy)
what is repetition priming?
-> when the test stimulus is the same as the priming stimulus
what is conceptual priming?
-> the enhancement caused by a priming stimulus due to the meaning (e.g. “chair” will facilitate the word “table” because they’re related by meaning)
what is the propaganda effect?
-> the fact that you’re more likely to rate statements you’ve heard/read before as true
can people who cannot form new LTM’s learn new skills?
yes
what is classical conditioning?
-> pairing a neutral stimulus with a reflexive response
