Chapter 8: Part 1 Flashcards
You will see _____ activity in the transition stage between being awake and falling asleep.
theta
You will see _____ activity when the person in a relaxed state.
alpha
what is beta activity?
Irregular electrical activity of 13–30 Hz recorded from the brain; generally associated with a state of arousal - attentive to environment or thinking actively
what is delta activity?
Regular, synchronous electrical activity of less than 4 Hz recorded from the brain; occurs during the deepest stages of slow-wave sleep.
when does delta activity occur?
stage 3 and 4, but 4 has the most
what is slow-wave sleep?
Non-REM sleep, characterized by synchronized EEG activity during its deeper stages.
what is REM sleep?
A period of desynchronized EEG activity during sleep, at which time dreaming, rapid eye movements, and muscular paralysis occur; also called paradoxical sleep.
how can someone be awakened during stage 4?
by only loud noises, they will be awake groggy or confused
can someone be awakened during REM sleep?
might not react to noises, but may be awakened by meaningful stimuli such as ones name, they may awake alert and attentive
how long are sleep cycle?
90 minutes
how much REM sleep occurs?
20 to 30 of REM sleep in a cycle
