Chapter 8: Parenterals Flashcards
What is osmotic pressure
A characteristic of a solution determined by the number of dissolved particles in it.
What are the two types of products that patenterals are packaged as
Large Volume Parenteral (LVP) & Small Volume Parenteral (SVP)
Isotonic
When a solution has an osmolarity equivalent to that of blood.
Hypertonic
When a solution has a greater osmolarity than that of blood.
Hypotonic
When a solution has a lesser osmolarity than that of blood.
What should the pH of an intravenous solution be around
7.4
What does it mean for a solution to be “Pyrogen Free”
To be free of any chemicals produced by microorganisms that can cause fever reactions in patients
What size do LVP solutions usually come in
Packages in containers holding 100 milliliters or more
What are the three different types of containers that LVP solutions come in
Glass bottle with an air vent tube, glass bottle without an air vent tube, and plastic bags.
What are the two ports at the end of the LVP container
Administration set port, and the medication port.
What is CSP
Compounded sterile preparations
What are some common LVP solutions
Sodium chloride solution, dextrose solution, ringers solution, lactated ringers solution.
What are SVP solutions
SVP solutions are packaged products that are either directly administered to a patient or added to another Parenteral formulation
What is it called when a drug is added to a Parenteral solution
Additive
What is the final mixture called when additive is mixed with the Parenteral solution
Admixture
