Chapter 8: Movements Flashcards
Gliding
This movement is in plane joints; slight movement. The simplest movement in joints.
Angular motion and the words associated.
Any motion that reduces or enlarges the angle between two bones.
extension, flexion, hyperextension, dorsiflexion, plantar, abduction, adduction.
Circular motions and associated terms.
rotation, supination, pronation, circumduction.
flexion
movement of a body part anterior to the coronal plane
extension
movement of a body
hyperextension
plantar flexion
pointing your toes away (standing on toes)
dorsiflexion
bringing the dorsum of the foot back to where you can see it. (foot lifted towards shin)
abduction
moving away from the body
adduction
moving towards the body
rotation laterally and medially
the rotation of the arm is an example.
pronation/supination
in an anatomical position, hands are facing anterior and are supinated (like holding a cup of soup) pronation is the opposite (pouring out the soup)
circumduction
a combination of extension and flexion in a sequence in a circular motion only capable at a ball and socket joint.
elevation (opposite)
depression
protraction (opposite)
retraction
excursion
opposition
reposition
inversion (opposite)
eversion
range of motion
both active and passive.
what are some factors that influence ROM?
- shape of articular surfaces around joint
- amount and shape of cartilage covering surfaces
- strength and location of ligaments and tendons
- bulk of surrounding tissues, such as muscle and adipose tissue
- amount of fluid in and around joint
- amount of pain in/around joint
- amount of use/disuse of joint
saddle joint
hinge joint
pivot joint
ball and socket joint
ellipsoid joint
