Q

fibrous joint

A

held together tightly by dense connective tissue. Pretty much no movement (so synarthrosis)

Q

cartilaginous joint

A

a pad of cartilage holds bones together in this type of joint. Pretty much no movement (synarthrosis).

6
Q

synovial joint

A

these joints contain synovial fluid and allow considerable movement (diarthrosis).

7
Q

what are the characteristics of fibrous joints?

A

1) connective tissue
2) little to no movement
3) no joint cavity

Q

syndesmosis

A

bones are further apart with some movement. Bones held together by ligaments.

13
Q

gomphoses

A

“peg in socket” joint like a tooth in the jaw…what else? not a lot of movement. Ex. Periodontal ligaments.

15
Q

synchondroses

A

hyaline cartilage joint
little to no movements (synarthrosis)
ex. epiphyseal plates of growing bones. Most are temporary as the hyaline cartilage is transformed into a synostosis joint as the tissue ossifies.

16
Q

symphysis

A

contains fibrocartilage, some movement. This is a pad between two movements
Ex. intervertebral disks

17
Q

synostosis

A

when a suture ossifies. Usually in older people.
