Chapter 8: Joints Flashcards
Joints
bind parts of the skeletal system, make bone growth possible, and enable body to move
Fibrous Joints
held together with dense connective tissue
Syndesmosis
what: bound by a sheet of dense connective tissue
function: amphiathrotic
where: between tibia and fibula
Suture
what: thin layer of connective tissue
function: synarthrotic
where: between flat bones of skull
Gomphosis
function: synarthrotic
where: tooth in jawbone
Cartilaginous Bones
connected by hyaline cartilage or fibrocartilage
Synchondrosis
what: bonds of hyaline cartilage unite bones
function: synarthrotic
where: between manubrium and 1st rib
Symphysis
what: pad of fibrocartilage
function: amphiathrotic
example: intervertebral discs
Synovial Joints
all are diathrotic joints
outer layer- ligaments
inner layer- synovial membrane, secrete synovial fluid
Synovial Membrane
the inner layer of the joint capsule consisting of a shiny, vascular lining of loose connective tissue
Synovial Fluid
contain stem cells which may function in ligament regeneration following injury
Meniscus
attach to the fibrous layer of the joint capsule peripherally, and its free surface projects into the joint cavity
Bursa
a fluid filled sac or saclike cavity, especially one countering friction at a joint
Ball & Socket Joint
round head in a cup and have widest range of motion ( hip, shoulder)
Condylar Joint
oval, fits into elliptical cavity, and moves back&forth, side to side (between metacarpals&phalanges)
