CHAPTER 8 - FOUNDATIONAL MOVEMENT SEQUENCES Flashcards
Functional Training
- Approach to training in which the primary goal is improved daily function
- Stems from philosophy where physiotherapists attempt to return injured person to go about their daily life with no limitations
Steps for Developing a Functional Program
- Evaluate static and dynamic postural stability and plan to develop balance skills as needed
- Understand righting and equilibrium reflexes and what they require to function properly
- Identify when training should be open or closed chain movements
- Evaluate biomotor abilities and adopt the training program to develop them as needed
- Incorporate foundational movement sequences
- Regress or progress basic movement sequences as appropriate
Postural Stability and Balance
Ability to stabilize dynamically and statically using muscle strength and reflexes optimizes the efficiency of movement and reduces injury
Static Postural Stability
Ex. Picking up an object from the floor:
Static postural stability is the process needed to keep the angle of the spine straight during the movement
Dynamic Postural Stability
Ex. Picking up an object from the floor:
Dynamic postural stability is the process needed to maintain alignment of knees and hips to ensure optimal alignment, thus increasing efficiency and decreasing risk
Effect of Static and Dynamic Stability
Simultaneous effects is maintaining centre of gravity of body over its base (running) or returning it there (recovering from jump)
