two kinds of achievement motivation
1) Implicit Achievement

Implicit Achievement
motivation might account for spontaneous actions
Self-Attributed Motives
come into play when we have time to ponder achievement options and decisions
Stability dimension of attribution
can explain performance on stable causes (ie. Intelligence) or unstable causes (luck)
locus dimension of attribution
explains performance on stable causes that are either external or internal
Control dimension of attribution
-whether we can or cannot control the cause of the success or failure
Approach goals
motivated by a desire to achieve
Avoidance goals
motivated by a wish to not feel incompetent (desire is not to succeed but rather not to fail)
coronary-prone behavior pattern
referred to Type A personality
3 major components that make up Type A trait
- Type A work harder regardless of outside pressure
- Show a sense of time urgency
- More likely to respond to frustrating situations with anger and hostility
This component became the most significant
Dispositional Optimism
-personality variable which suggests people are relatively consistent in the extent to which they adopt these viewpoints.
