Idiographic Approach (Gordon Allport)
-dentify the unique combination of traits that best accounts for the personality of a single individual
Nomothetic Approach (Gordon Allport)
-assume that all people can be described along a single dimension according to their level of, for example, assertiveness or anxiety
Neuroticism
- Ø Refers to a dimension that places people on a continuum according to their emotional stability and personal adjustment
Extraversion
-Places people on a continuum of being extroverted/introverted
Openness
- Refers to openness to experience (rather than openness in an interpersonal sense
- some researchers refer to openness as intellect
Agreeableness
High scores = are helpful, trusting and sympathetic. Prefer cooperation over competition
Low scores- like to fight for their interests and beliefs
Conscientiousness
-Refers to how controlled and self disciplined we are
® High scorers = organized, plan oriented and determined
Low scorers = careless, easily distracted from tasks and undependable
-some researchers refer to this dimension as will to achieve or work
