What is Decent Work?
-Fair Income: Having enough money to pay bills with leftover for savings
-Security in the workplace: physical/mental health not at risk
- Social protection for families: safe childcare options so parents can go to work
5 challenges to decent work
-Unemployment (lack of jobs): many countries have high unemployment rates with no ways to generate jobs. also includes unemployment, where there are jobs but do not provide proper support
-lack of social protection: lack of sick pay, childcare, pension, disability pay
-discrimination: in formal and informal sectors, example gender gaps in STEM (formal) and Fisheries (informal)
-Child Labour: complex and hard to define, robs children of childhoods and can be dangerous
-Modern Slavery: forced labour and marriage to pay off debts
3 strategies to achieving decent work
-Invest in and expand social protection
-fair and effective migration governance
-embrace green growth
Describe strategies of social protection
-unemployment protection
-cash transfer programs
-public employment programs
-payments for ecosystem services
-make employment a fundamental right
what is green growth?
Green growth: Cannot indefinitely grow. Need to find ways to be sustainable and economically viable. Growth is only about producing/consuming more. Need for critical look at how to grow sustainably.
