Interprofessional
Involves individuals from different professions
Interprofessional Education (IPE)
When students from two or more professions learn about, from & with each other to enable effective collaboration and improve health outcomes
Goal of Interprofessional Education
-Build safer & better patient-centered and community/population-oriented U.S. health care system
-Move beyond profession-specific education
General Background on IPE
-Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC) formed in 2009
-IPE Competencies officially published in 2011
-National Center for Interprofessional Practice & Education formed in 2012 based at University of Minnesota
Purpose of IPE
- Increase understanding between professional cultures
- Promote interprofessional collaboration
- Enhance professional practice
Where does IPE come into play?
-Pre-Licensure Education (schooling, certification trainings)
-Post-Licensure Education (working, graduate education)
Discipline
A branch of knowledge, typically one studied in higher education
Intradisciplinary
Within one discipline
Interdisciplinary
Within 2 or more disciplines
Examples of Discipline
Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing, Exercise Science, Physical Therapy, etc.
Profession
A calling requiring specialized knowledge & often long & intensive academic preparation
Disciplinary Competencies
Skills & knowledge taught within a specific discipline/profession
Silo Concept
Isolation of disciplines or professions
Problems with disciplinary competencies?
-Tend to lead to Silo Concept
-Easy to be completely focused on discipline/profession
