Chapter 8 : Changes to materials Flashcards
Simple chemical reactions. Neutralisation. Investigating acids and alkalis. Detecting chemical reactions.
What are physical properties?
The appearance, boiling point, melting point and state of matter of a substance.
Name 3 physical properties of Magnesium.
Shiny, Strong, Solid
What are chemical properties?
The pH level and the way a substance reacts with another substance.
Name a chemical property of Magnesium
It reacts with oxygen.
Write the chemical equation for how Magnesium reacts with hydrochloric acid
Magnesium + Hydrochloric acid = Magnesium Chloride + Hydrogen
How do you test for hydrogen?
Place a lighted splint near the mouth of the tube containing the gas. If there is a pop and the flame goes out, it is hydrogen.
How do you test for carbon dioxide using limewater?
Mix the limewater with the gas, it the gas turns cloudy then there is carbon dioxide.
What type of reaction happens when an acid is mixed with an alkali?
Neutralisation
When working with chemicals, what safety precautions must you take?
Wear safety goggles, remove all accessories that could come in contact with the substances, wear gloves, keep hair neat and tied up.
