Chapter 1 : Cells Flashcards
Plant cells. Animal cells. Specialised cells. Cells, tissues and organs.
State 2 differences between animal cells and plant cells
Animal cells do not have cell walls or chloroplasts while plant cells have cell walls and chloroplasts.
What is the function of the nucleus?
It is the brain of the plant cell. It controls all activity.
What is the function of the chloroplasts
The chloroplasts are where the plants make their food ; photosynthesis
What is the function of the cell membrane?
The cell membrane controls what goes in an out of the cell.
What is the function of the cell wall?
The cell wall holds the cell in shape.
What is the function of the mitochondrion (mitochondria)
The mitochondrion turn food into energy.
What is the function of the sap vacuole?
The sap vacuole stores liquids
What is a cell?
A cell is a singular unit which all organisms are built from
What is a tissue?
A group of the same kind of cells working together to do the same job
What is an organ?
A group of different tissues working together
What is an organ system?
A collection of organs working together
List 2 adaptations and functions of the root hair cell
- It has a long thin extension to absorb water
- It has no chloroplasts because it doesn’t need sunlight, as it is underground.
What is a characteristic of all living organisms?
They need food to survive
What is the function of red blood cells?
To carry and deliver oxygen to the rest of the body
What adaptation gives an advantage to red blood cells to carry out their duty?
They do not have a nucleus. This is so they have more space to carry more oxygen.
