addiction
they psychological and physiological need for legal/illegal drugs, alcohol, and/or gambling
drug
any substance that when taken into the body alters its functioning in some way, used therapeutically or recreationally
Licit drugs
Legal to manufacture, sell, posses and use
Illicit Drugs
socially defined as deviant, using them is criminal and a social problem
Drug abuse
Excessive/inappropriate use of a drug that results in some form of physical, mental, or social impairement
Drug addiction
dependency on a drug in order to avoid withdrawal symptoms and maintain a sense of well-being
Tolerance
when larger doses of a drug are required over time in order to achieve the same physiological effect originally achieved from a smaller dose
Withdrawal
physiological/psychological symptoms that regular drug users experience when they discontinue drug use
The 4 Long Term Drinking Patterns
- Social Drinkers; drink at social occasions, range from occasionally to relatively frequently
- Heavy Drinkers; frequent drinkers who usually drink more when they drink, more likely to become drunk
- Acute Alcoholics; trouble controlling their use of alcohol, schedule their day around drinking
- Chronic Alcoholics; lost control over their drinking and engage in compulsive behaviours

physical health, family and work functioning, friendships, legal problems etc
Alcohol Related Harms: Others
insulting/humiliating others, verbal abuse, fights, family/marriage problems, being assaulted
What are the health issues related to alcoholism?
nutritional deficiencies, diabetes, alcoholic dementia, heart problems, alcoholic cirrhosis

the range of disabilities/diagnoses that result from drinking alcohol during pregnancy
