The view that the best person can rise to the top in any situation
Social stratification
Hierarchical organization based on control of basic necessities

Extent to which we have access to health care, food, education, clothes and shelter
Wright’s 4 Classes

Under class
Those who are chronically low income
Relative poverty
Being able to afford the necessities of life
Welfare state
Nation where the government intervenes in the welfare of its citizens, through programs, policies, standards and regulations
Culture of poverty
SI, people of low incomes were raised and socialized to have different value systems and beliefs than those of medium and high society
Cultural capital
SI, Social assets required to access success, ex. values/beliefs, competency in language
Reserve army of workers
Marx, Increasing use of technology and downsizing creates a large amount of people so desperate for a job they are willing to work for cheap, keeps wages low
Feminization of poverty
There is a disproportionate level of women in poverty, ex. glass ceiling
