Chapter 8 Flashcards
base unit
one of the seven fundamental units of measure in the SI system of units. the base units are meter (length), kilogram (mass), second (time), candela (luminous intensity), kelvin (temperature),and mole (amount of substance).
derived unit
a unit of measure in the SI system based on a combination of various of the seven base units.
International System of Units
the system of units administered in France and accepted by most of the countries in the world; the metric system.
kilogram
the SI system base unit for mass; one of the seven base units in the SI system.
liter
a unit of volume equal to 1,000 cubic centimeters; not an official SI system unit, but commonly used in scientific study.
meter
the SI system base unit for length; one of the seven base units of the SI system
metric prefix
prefixes added to the units of measure in the SI system to indicate multiples or fraction multiples. for example the prefix kilo- indicates a multiple of 1,000, so a kilometer is 1,000 meters. the prefix micro- indicates a fraction multiple of 1/1,000,000, so a micrometer is 1/1,000,000 of a meter.
metric system
the common term in the U.S. for the International System of Units.
right circular cylinder
an object with a circular base and a curving side that is perpendicular to the base.
right rectangular solid
an object with a rectangular base and rectangular sides in which all angles are right angles.
second
the base unit of time in the SI system; one of the seven base units in the SI system
SI System
the InternationalSystem of Units administered in France and accepted by most of the countries of the world; commonly known in the U.S. as the metric system.
unit conversion factor
an expression with a value of one, written by placing equivalent quantities expressed by different units of measure int he numerator and denominator of a fraction.
