Chapter 1 Flashcards
Atom
the smallest part of an element, composed of a nucleus of protons and neutrons surrounded by a cloud of electrons located in orbitals according to their energies.
Charge
an electrical property of protons and electrons. protons have positive charge and electrons have an identical amount of negative charge; accompanied by an electric field.
Electron
one of the three fundamental particles inside atoms; located in orbitals by energy around the nucleus; possesses negative charge and has a mass 1/1,836 the mass of a proton.
Energy
holds everything together and allows every process to happen. one of the three basic constituents of the universe the other two being matter and intelligence.
Intelligence
the wisdom of God embedded every where in the order and structure of nature; one of the three basic thing that make up our universe the other two being matter and energy.
Ion
an atom that has lost or gained one or more electrons thus acquiring a net electric charge.
Mass
the variable used to quantify the amount of inertia in an object.
Matter
anything that has mass and volume. one of the three basic things the universe is composed of the other two being intelligence and energy.
Neutron
on of the three subatomic particles inside atoms; located in the nucleus, has no electric charge, and has a mass very similar to that of a proton (but slightly greater.)
Nucleus
the center of an atom where the protons and neutrons are.
Orbital
an energy region were up to two electrons may reside.
Proton
one of the three particles atoms are composed of; is found in the nucleus has positive charge, and has a mass very similar to that of a neutron (but slightly smaller.)
Shell
a layer in an atom containing one or more orbitals where the atoms electrons may reside.
Subatomic Particle
mainly protons neutrons and electron although there are about 60 less commonly known particles.
Volume
the variable used to quantify the amount of space an object takes up.
