objectives- establish time period, develop design concept consistent with that of director, provide central image or metaphor, ensure scenery matches production elements, solve practical design problems
read script for pleasure, specifics, and character placement
reading for specifics- must answer genre, where and when action takes place, how story is told, what is style, what specific requirements are needed

Elements of Scene Design
line- outline of elements onstage
mass- weight of scenic elements
composition- arrangement of elements(all on side, divided evenly, etc)
texture- “feel” projected by surfaces and fabrics
color- shadings and contrasts of color combinations
Ground Plan
blueprint of stage
thumbnail sketch- general sense of what the set looks like
rendering sketch- finished colored drawings
maquette- small real model, no colors
production model- has all color and texture
