Chapter 8 Flashcards
What is degradation ( in the context of PPE) ?
The physical destruction or decomposition of a clothing or material due to exposure to chemicals, use or ambient conditions.
What is penetration ? ( PPE)
The flow or movement of HAZMats though closures, seams, porous materials, and pinholes or other imperfections through the material.
What does permeation mean ?
The process by which a chemical can pass through a material or membrane on a molecular level. It’s different than penetration because it passes thought the material itself vs though a hole in the material.
The time from the initial attack on the material to the time it is detected on the other side is ?
Breakthrough rate
Permeation rate is what ?
The rate at which a chemical passes through a chemically protective material.
Expressed in micrograms/ square cm/ minute.
What are 8 parameters that should be considered when evaluating and choosing CPC materials.
- Chemical resistance
- Flammability
- Strength and durability
- Overall integrity
- Flexibility
- Temperature characteristics
- Shelf life
- Decon and disposal
What are the two types of chemical protective clothing ?
Limited use
Reusable
Two types of air purification decides are ?
APR’s - air purifying respirators, filter contaminates from the users breathing air.
PAPR’s - powered air purifying respirators, use a blower to force atmospheric air through air purifying elements. Also provides a slight positive pressure which increases safety
What are atmosphere supplying devices ?
Respiratory protection systems that have their own air source.
Two types - SCBA and SAR.
