Q

Bulk packaging is defined how?

A

Any packaging including VEHICLEs that meant the DOT definition of :

  • liquids – greater than 450 L
  • solids – net mass greater than 400 Kg
  • compresed gas – water capacity greater than 454kg

can be an integral part of a transport vehicle (ie. cargo tank truck) or as a separate container placed onto a conveyance

Q

An example of non bulk packaging is :

A

BAGS- cloth burlap, plastic, or paper; close by folding gluing sticking, can weigh between 0-500 lbs
BOTTLES- made of plastic and metal, closed with threads or stoppers, range from Oz to 20 gal, can be called jugs or jars,
DRUMS- made of metal, plastic, or fibreboard, often found in 55 gal size, two types of drums typically – closed head and open head.

Q

More examples of Nonbulk packaging include

A

BOXES- made of fibreboard, wood, metal, plastic; can range in weight from 65-500 lbs, can hold combinations of HAZMATS ( overpack)
CARBOYS- typically a glass bottle housed in an outer packaging, usually up to 20 gal, found in lab situations

Q

What are non pressure tank containers called ( intermodal)

A

IMO type 1 and IMO type 2

  • classified as non pressure can still have a max. operating pressure of up to 100psi
  • Imo type 1 transport hazardous and non hazardous liquid material with flash-points greater than 0 deg C
  • IMO type 2 can transport the same but with flashpoint from 0 deg C to 60 deg C.

Q

A IMO type 5 differs from a type 1 or 2 how ?

A
  • a pressure vessel with supporting frame built around.
  • range in pressure for 100psi to 500 psi,
  • pressure relief valving is found on top of container.

16
Q

IMO type 7 is used for what ?

A

transportation of cryogenics.

- often look similar to a type 1 or 2

17
Q

tube modules are used for what ?

A
  • very high pressure
  • consist of many tubes built into an IM frame
  • usually have a box type compartment on one end to contain valving
18
Q

what is a 306/DOT406 truck called

A

atmospheric pressure cargo tank truck.

  • often have an oval cross section indicating low working pressure ( less than 4psi)
  • have overturn protection ( roll over structure ) on top
19
Q

what is a 307/DOT407

A

Low pressure chemical cargo tank truck

  • circular cross section, often has visible strengthening rings, ( horseshoes )
  • maximum working pressure can be 40 psi
20
Q

what is a 312/DOT412 ?

A

corrosives cargo tank truck

  • narrower than 407, oven to accommodate heavy contents
  • can operate between 35-50 psi but rarely up to 100 psi
21
Q

what is a 330/331 ?

A

High pressure cargo tank truck ( propane truck)

  • minimum pressure of 100psi up to 500 psi
  • rounded heads or ends
22
Q

An MC338 is what ?

A

cryogenic liquid cargo tank truck.

  • usually have a work box or ‘ doghouse” at rear of unit
  • pressures can range from 25-500 psi
  • often have relief valves that natural vent excess pressure to atmosphere
23
Q

compressed gas trailers look like what ?

A

Tubes on a trailer

- high pressure 2000-5000 psi

24
Q

How can you tell a ‘dry bulk tank truck’

A

it has a hopper bottom.

- can use air to unload content but does not usually hold pressure to work

25
Q

How big is a placard ?

A

Approx 11 inches

26
Q

How big is a label ?

A

4 inches

27
Q

What three things must a pipeline marker provide ?

A

Contents, operator, emergency telephone number
