Chapter 6. Flashcards
what are the three basic elements of ID a HAZMAT?
recognition, identification, classification.
what are 7 clues that responders can rely upon at a HAZMAT incident ?
- occupant and location
- container shapes
- markings and colours
- placards and labels
- shipping papers and facility documents
- monitoring and detection equipment
- senses
what is defined as non bulk packaging?
- can hold solid liquids or gasses
- DOT determines the definitions
- for liquids capacity is 450L or less
- solids net mass of 400 KG or less
- compressed gasses water capacity of 450 L or less
Bulk packaging is defined how?
Any packaging including VEHICLEs that meant the DOT definition of :
- liquids – greater than 450 L
- solids – net mass greater than 400 Kg
- compresed gas – water capacity greater than 454kg
can be an integral part of a transport vehicle (ie. cargo tank truck) or as a separate container placed onto a conveyance
An example of non bulk packaging is :
BAGS- cloth burlap, plastic, or paper; close by folding gluing sticking, can weigh between 0-500 lbs
BOTTLES- made of plastic and metal, closed with threads or stoppers, range from Oz to 20 gal, can be called jugs or jars,
DRUMS- made of metal, plastic, or fibreboard, often found in 55 gal size, two types of drums typically – closed head and open head.
More examples of Nonbulk packaging include
BOXES- made of fibreboard, wood, metal, plastic; can range in weight from 65-500 lbs, can hold combinations of HAZMATS ( overpack)
CARBOYS- typically a glass bottle housed in an outer packaging, usually up to 20 gal, found in lab situations
Cylinders can contain three basic materials, what are they ?
Aerosol, uninsulated, and cryogenic( insulated)
A dewar is a type of non bulk package, it is used for what ?
Cryogenic liquids, often found in laboratories, can be fixed or wheeled, sometimes have dispensing equipment attached ( think liquid nitrogen tank)
A tonner is used as bulk transport vessel for what ?
liquified gases, have a cylindrical shape and one end is often convex,
IBC’s are what?
intermediate bulk containers, they contain solid materials. also called super sacks, can be in a box.
polyethylene or steel tanks are also referred to as what ?
Composite IBC’s, used to haul liquids in bulk( think farm chemicals)
totes are examples of what type of IBC?
rigid bulk packaging, can be made of metal or plastic, have valving for dispensing of materials
A portable bin is different than a Tote how/
designed to be used in the same fashion, often look the same however are designed to hold solids. can be moved by forklift.
What are non pressure tank containers called ( intermodal)
IMO type 1 and IMO type 2
- classified as non pressure can still have a max. operating pressure of up to 100psi
- Imo type 1 transport hazardous and non hazardous liquid material with flash-points greater than 0 deg C
- IMO type 2 can transport the same but with flashpoint from 0 deg C to 60 deg C.
A IMO type 5 differs from a type 1 or 2 how ?
- a pressure vessel with supporting frame built around.
- range in pressure for 100psi to 500 psi,
- pressure relief valving is found on top of container.
