Chapter 11 Flashcards
ALARA means what in regard to decon?
Preforming decon to a level that is As Low As Reasonably Achievable
what is the process of transfering a hazardous material from it source to people animals the enviroment or equipment called ?
contamination
what is an area of safe refuge ?
a temporary holding area for contaminated people until a decon corridor is set up
what is a decon corridor?
a disticnt area within the warm zone that functions as a protective buffer and bridge between hot and cold zone. this is where decon procedures take place.
what is the inital phase of decontamination called?
gross decon.
- it reduces the amount of surface contamination signiicatly
what comes after gross decon?
secondary decon
- designed to physically remove surface contaminates to a safe or acceptable level
what is the difference between direct contamination and cross or secondary contamination ?
direct is from direct contact with the source of contamintation, secondary is from comming into contact with people who have been directly contaminated.
- results from poor site management practices.
what are the six categories of contaminants?
high acute toxicity moderate to highly chrinic toxicity embryonic contaminates allergenic contaminants flammable contaminants highly reactive or exlosive contaminantes water reactive contaminants etioloigcal contamintaes radioactive
what are some methods of evaluating the effectivness of decon procedures ?
- visual observation
- monitoring equipment
- wipe sampling
when selecting a decon site, what factors should be considered?
- can decon be conducted safely
- are existing resources immediatly available to decon personnel and equipment
- can the equipment used be decontaminated?
who is in charge of the decon ?
- the decon team lead
- should be at least a HAZmat technician
- those not directly in charge can be trained to ops level
what level of protection does the decon team need to be equopid with ?
at least one level of garment below the entry team
where can responders and ICS find decon information ?
- CANUTEC
- sds’s
- online databases often have info
- technical information specialists
how effetive is the removal of garments at decon ?
can be as effective as removing 80% of contaminates
how should decon runoff be dealt with ?
it should be collected and disposed of through proper channels
- in an emergency decon scenario, as long as the runoff dosnt pose a threat itself it should be a low priority
