Chapter 8 Flashcards
What is a heterotroph?
Organisms which obtain energy from the foods they consume.
What is adenosine triphosphate?
One of the principal chemical compounds that cells use to store and release energy.
What is photosynthesis?
The process by which plants use the energy from sunlight to convert water and carbon dioxide into high-energy carbohydrates.
What is pigment?
Light-absorbing molecules that plants gather the sun’s energy with.
What is chlorophyll?
A plant’s principal pigment.
What is a thylakoid?
Saclike photosynthetic membranes
What is a photosystem?
Clusters of pigments.
What is a stroma?
The region outside the thylakoid membranes.
What is NADP+?
A carrier molecule.
What are light-dependent reactions?
Why plants need light to grow???
What are ATP synthase?
A protein that spans the membrane and allows H+ ions to pass through it.
What is the Calvin cycle?
When plants use the energy that ATP and NADPH contain to build high-energy compounds that can be stored for a long time.
What is an autotroph?
Organisms which make their own food
