Chapter 2 Flashcards
What is a nucleus?
The centre of the atom.
What is an electron?
A negatively charged particle with 1/1840 the mass of a proton.
What is an element?
A pure substance that consists entirely of one type of atom.
What is an isotope?
Atoms of the same element that differ in the number of neutrons they contain.
What is a compound?
A substance formed by the chemical combination of two or more elements in definite proportions.
What is an ionic bond?
When one or mote electrons are transferred from one atom to another.
What is a covalent bond?
A covalent bond is when electrons are shared between atoms.
What is an ion?
An atom that loses electrons (with a positive charge) or an atom that gains electrons (with a negative charge).
What is a molecule?
The smallest unit of most compounds.
What are van der Waals forces?
A slight attraction between the oppositely charged regions of nearby molecules.
What is cohesion?
An attraction between molecules of the same substance.
What is an adhesion?
An attraction between molecules of different substances.
What is a mixture?
A material composed of two or more elements or compounds that are physically mixed together but not chemically combined.
What is a solution?
A mixture of two or more substances with the components evenly distributed throughout the solution.
What is a solute?
The substance that is dissolved in a solution.
