Some Latinos embraced the ideas of the Enlightenment. They watched as revolutions spread through the United States and then France, but they were hesitant to embark on their own. When Napoleon put his brother Joseph on the throne of Spain, this was the catalyst. They saw this as a weakening of Spanish power and demanded independence.

They threatened the system by revolting because they want to have their own independence and not be ruled by another country, but they wanted to be united as a nation with people who share a common heritage or ethnicity and didn’t care about their boundary on a map
