Chapter 8 & 17 Electricity and Facial Machines Flashcards
The flow of electricity along a conductor
Electric current
Any substance, material, or medium that easily transmits electricity
Conductor
Any substance that does not easily transmit electricity
Insulator
Constant, even flowing current that travels in one direction only and is produced by chemical means
Direct current (DC)
Rapid and interrupted current, flowing first in one direction and then in the opposite direction; produced by mechanical means and changes direction 60 times per second
Alternating current (AC)
Supplies current to the circuit
Live connection
Completes the circuit and carries the current safely away to the ground
Ground connection
The use of electrical devices to treat the skin and for therapeutic benefits
Electrotherapy
Negative or positive pole of an electric current
Polarity
Positive electrode; usually red and is marked with a P or a + sign
Anode
Negative electrode; usually black and is marked with a N or a - sign
Cathode
Process of forcing an acidic (positive) product deeper into the tissues using galvanic current from the positive pole toward the negative pole; CALMS AND SOOTHES THE SKIN
Cataphoresis
Process of infusing an alkaline (negative) product into the tissues from the negative pole toward the positive pole; STIMULATES THE NERVE ENDINGS
Anaphoresis
An extremely low level of electricity that mirrors the body’s natural electrical impulses
Microcurrent
Also known as phototherapy; the application of light rays to the skin for the treatment of acne, wrinkles, capillaries, pigmentation, or hair removal
