Chapter 8&17 Flashcards
electric current
The flow of electricity along a conductor.
a conductor
Any substance, material, or medium that easily transmits electricity.
insulator
A substance that does not easily transmit electricity.
alternating current
a rapid and interrupted current, flowing first in one direction then in the opposite.
wood’s lamp
A filtered back light used to illuminate skin disorders, fungi, bacterial disorders, and pigmentation.
vacuum machine
Also known as a suction machine, it is a device that vacuums/suctions the skin to remove impurities.
high frequency machine
An apparatus that utilizes alternating or sinusoidal current to produce a mild to strong heat effect.
spray machine
A spray misting device.
Lucas sprayer
An atomizer designed to apply plant extracts and other ingredients to the skin.
thermolysis
heat effect used for permanent hair removal.
sinusoidal current
a smooth, repetitive alternating current; the most commonly used alternating current waveform.
saponification
a chemical reaction during desincrustation where the current transforms sebum into soap.
rotary brush machine
The machine is used to lightly exfoliate and stimulate the skin.
It helps soften excess oil, dirt, and cell buildup.
electrotherapy
Electrical facial treatments.
Direct current
A constant and direct current that contains positive and negative poles.
cataphoresis
The process of forcing an acidic (+) product into deeper tissues using galvanic current from the positive pole toward the negative pole; tightens and firms skin.
anaphoresis
The process of infusing an alkaline (-) product into the tissues from the negative pole toward the positive pole.
Live connection
Supplies current to the circuit
polarity
Negative or positive pole of an electric current.
anode
Positive electrode, usually red and marked with a ‘+’ sign.
cathode
Negative electrode, usually black and marked with a ‘-‘ sign.
microcurrent
An extremely low level of electricity that mirrors the body’s natural electrical impulses.
light therapy
The application of light rays to the skin for the treatment of acne, wrinkles, capillaries, pigmentation, or hair removal.
hot towels
Used for both face and body treatments, providing a warm, soothing, softening benefit to the skin. Utilized for removing facial masks and softening skin before extractions.
magnifying lamp
It magnifies the face and helps the esthetician treat and analyze the skin.
diopters
various powers of magnification on a magnifying lamp.
galvanic current
It is used to create two significant reactions: chemical desincrustation and ionic iontophoresis.
skin scope
Larger skin analysis tool that uses UV light with an interior mirror.
iontophoresis
It is the process of using electric current to introduce water-soluble solutions into the skin.
ions
atoms or molecules that carry an electric charge.
Desincrustation
The infusion of a product that has a negative pH, to facilitate deep cleansing.
