Soft colorless wax derived from petroleum.
Toners
Finish the cleansing process by removing any products left on the skin and help balance the skins pH.
Serums
Concentrated ingredients used for specific corrective treatments.
Moisturizers
Seals in moisture and protect the barrier layer of the skin. Can also hydrate and balance the oil-water moisture content of the skin.
Skin care program
Long range plan involving home care, salon treatments and client education.
Sebaceous glands
Skin is often dry due to the inactivity of these.
Occlusive products
Necessary to protect and balance dry skin.
Dehydration
Medication, drying cosmetics, excessive steaming, and the use of drying packs and masks contribute to this.
Rosacea
This is common for those with sensitive, mature skin.
Hyperpigmentation
Dark pigmentation areas on the skin.
Pick
Clients should not be instructed to do this to their blemishes.
Finger cots
Individual finger “gloves” used with pieces of cotton wrapped around the finger.
Enzyme peel
The use of this before an extraction helps to prep the skin by softening the plug of dead skin cells, sebum and debris from follicular shaft.
Desincrustation
Process used to soften oil and comedones in follicles.
Lancet
Small, sharp, pointed surgical blade with double edge used to pierce or prick the skin.
Acne serum
This can be applied after extractions to treat the skin.
Folliculitis Barbae
Hair grows slightly under the skin, becomes trapped there and causes a bacterial infection.
Pseudofolliculitis
This condition results from improper shaving techniques, but does not involve bacterial infections.
Adam’s Apple
Should never exert pressure on this part of the body when removing products.
Massage
Promotes physiological relaxation, increases circulation and metabolism, and increases product penetration.
Insertion
Is the portion of the muscle at the more movable attachment [where it is attached to another muscle or to a movable bone of joint].
Origin
Is the portion of the muscle at the fixed attachment. Know the correct direction to massage to avoid breaking down tissue and potentially causing premature aging.
Dr. Jacquet movement
Beneficial for oily skin; it helps move sebum out of the follicles and up to the skins surface by kneading.
Acupressure
Oriental technique of applying pressure to specific points of the body (acupressure points) to release muscle tension, restore balance, and stimulate chi. (Life force; energy)
Shiatsu
The application of pressure on acupuncture points found throughout the body to balance the body’s energy flow and to promote health. It originated as a form of physical therapy in Japan.
Manual lymph drainage
Abbreviated MLD; gentle, rhythmic pressure on the lymphatic system to detoxify and remove waste materials form the body more quickly; reduces swelling and is used before and after surgery for pre-and post-op care.
Reflexology
Technique that involves applying pressure to specific points on the feet, hands, or ears
Effleurage
Light, continuous stroking movement applied with the fingers (digital) or the palms (Palmer) in a slow rhythmic manner.
Petrissage
Kneading movement that stimulates the underlying tissues; performed by lifting, squeezing, and pressing the tissue with a light firm pressure.
Fulling
Form of Petrissage in which the tissue is grasped, gently lifted, and spread out. Used mainly for massaging on the arms.
Friction
Deep rubbing movement requiring pressure on the skin with the fingers or palm while moving them under an underlying structure. Chucking, rolling, and wringing are variations of friction.
Chucking
Massage movement accomplished by grasping the flesh firmly in one hand up and down along the bone while the other hand keeps the arm or leg in a steady position.
Rolling
Massage movement in which the tissues are pressed and twisted using a fast back and forth movement
Wringing
Vigorous movement in which the hands, places a little distance apart on both sides of the clients arm or leg, working downward apply a twisting motion against the bones in the opposite direction.
Tapotement
Also known as percussion, consists of fast tapping, patting, and hacking movements.
Slapping
Massage movement in which the wrists are kept flexible so that the palms come in contact with the skin in light, firm, and rapid strokes; one hand follows the other; with each slapping stroke, the flesh is lifting slightly
Hacking
Chopping movement performed with the edges of the hands in massage
Vibration
In massage, the rapid shaking movement in which the technician uses the body and shoulders, not just the fingertips, to create the movement.
Paraffin mask
Used to warm the skin and promote penetration of ingredients deeper into the skin through the heat trapped under it.
