Chapter 8 Flashcards
1
Q
what is nonneoplastic disease of bone
A
- not neoplasms
- 3 main disease states: fibrous dysplasia, paget disease, osteomalacia
2
Q
what is fibrous dysplasia
A
- replacement of bone with abnormal fibrous connective tissue
- interspersed
- various calcifications
- benign
- characteristic ground glass appearance
3
Q
what are the 2 types of fibrous dysplasia
A
- monostatic (one bone affected)
- polyostatic (multiple bones affected) – causes unknown, abnormal mesenchymal cell function
4
Q
what is monostatic fibrous dysplasia
A
- most common (85% of cases)
- single bone
- max/mn/ribs/long bone
- children
- young adults
- bulging buccal plate (tipping, displacement, malocclusion)
5
Q
what is polyostatic fibrous dysplasia
A
- more than one bone
- children, female most common
- skull, clavicles, long bones
- bowing of bones
- cafe au lait spots
6
Q
what are clinical and radiographic features of polyostotic fibrous dysplasia
A
- painless enlargement
- except extreme cases
- progressive
- unilateral
- ground glass appearance
7
Q
what is diagnosis and treatment for polyostotic fibrous dysplasia
A
- dx: characterized by cellular fibrous connective tissue interspersed with irregularly shaped bony trabeculae. in fibrous dysplasia, radiographic changes blend into the surrounding normal bone
- tx: surgical recontouring of bone for cosmetic reasons
