Chapter 8 Flashcards
What is Schrodinger’s cat
A thought experiment that explains the dual nature of the electron. An imaginary cat is in steel chamber that contains radioactive atoms. When an energetic particle is emitted by one of the atoms, a flask breaks with breaks with hydrocyanic acid. If the flask breaks the cat dies. If the flask breaks the cat dies. If the steel chamber closed its unobserved, which makes the radioactive particle in a state that is both emitted and not emitted. This makes the cat dead or not undead. When chamber is opened , the act of observation forces the entire system into one state or another. The cat will be observed to be dead or alive
wave particle duality of light
some characteristics of light can be thought of as a wave and others as a particles
Light is what type of radiation?
EM
Magnetic field
region of space where a magnetic particle experiences a force
Electric field
region in space where an electrically charged particle experiences a force
What does this diagram represent?
Em radiation is a wave of osciallting electric and magnetic fields that are perpandicular to eachother moving through spcae
How fast are waves in a vacuum?
They move at the speed of light
Why is there a delay when hearing/seeing lightning and thunder?
speed of light is faster than the speed of sound.
What characterizes waves?
amplitude and wavelength
What is frequency?
Number of wave crests that pass through a staionary point
What are the two units for frequency?
Hz and s-1
Equation that shows relationship between speed of light, wavelength, and frequency
c =lamda*v
what is frequency
number of wavelengths of that wave that pass through a fixed point in one unit time (usually second)
What is diffraction?
spreading of waves around obstacles
What is the photoelectric effect?
minimum frequency of light or threshold frequency that is reqiured for emission of electron
