Chapter 8 Flashcards

1
Q

What is Schrodinger’s cat

A

A thought experiment that explains the dual nature of the electron. An imaginary cat is in steel chamber that contains radioactive atoms. When an energetic particle is emitted by one of the atoms, a flask breaks with breaks with hydrocyanic acid. If the flask breaks the cat dies. If the flask breaks the cat dies. If the steel chamber closed its unobserved, which makes the radioactive particle in a state that is both emitted and not emitted. This makes the cat dead or not undead. When chamber is opened , the act of observation forces the entire system into one state or another. The cat will be observed to be dead or alive

16
Q

How does light photon interact with single electron to lose energy?

A

1-releasing electron from binding energy

2-giving the rest as KE to emitted electron

17
Q

What is Eq that goes with photoelectric effect?

A

KE = hv-I

  • I is the binding energy of elecron on surface
  • think of energy of photon-energy of electron
18
Q

De-Brogile wavelength equation

A

lambda = h/mv

19
Q

What is the uncertainty principle?

A

impossible to know the momentum and location of electron simulatneously. if you know location more, you know less about momentum, vice versa

how do you find value of l?

A

l <= n-1

24
Q

How do you find ml

A

range of -l to l

25
Q

What is the Bohr model?

A

electrons move around nucleus in circular orbit

26
