Chapter 1 Flashcards
What are atoms?
submicroscopic particles that are fundamental building blocks of ordinary matter, rare in nature
What are molecules?
geometrical arrangement’s of atoms that are bound together
What are the three states of matter?
Solid, liquid and gas
What is the solid state of matter
atoms/molecules are packed together in fixed locations, don’t move past or around each other, have fixed volume and rigid shape
Two types of solid matter
crystalline and amorphous
What is liquid state of matter
atoms or molecules pack together closely as solids but are free to move around each other, have fixed volume but not fixed shape, assume shape of containers
What is the gas state of matter
atoms/molecules have a lot space and are free to move relative to one another, making gases compressible, always assume shape and volume
What is a pure substance
made up of one component and doesn’t vary from one sample to anther, can be individual atoms or atoms grouped together, can be element or compound
Mixture
composed of two or more components in proportions that can vary from one sample to another- sweetened tea, we can make this tea very sweet or not so sweet
