all conflict occurs within a system of some kind
the system effects behavior and behavior effects the system
the whole is not equal to the sum of the parts, may be more or less
managing, resolving, avoiding conflict
managing: using to attain constructive, positive effects
resolving: getting rid of conflict
avoiding: not addressing conflict

identification of the main elements
position: what party is looking for
interest: what they want to achieve (motivating factor)
needs: what they need to be happy

IBR: respect individual differences while avoiding fixed positions
TKI: approaches organized by assertiveness and cooperativeness: avoiding, competing, compromising, accommodating, collaborating
