Chapter 7 Vocabulary Formation Evaluation Flashcards
a continuous, foot by foot record of the hole as it is being drilled.
Drilling operations Log
type of rock
lithology
pieces of the drilled rocks brought to the surface by the returning mud stream.
Cuttings
appear as a stain under the microscope, or show up as colored fluorescence when the porosity is exposed to ultraviolet light.
Oil Shows
cuttings are analyzed by pulverizing them and running the released vapors through a gas analyzer
Gas Show
drilling with a doughnut-shaped bit that allows a cylinder-shaped core of undrilled rock to rise up inside the pipe above the bit.
coring
cores are taken from the side of the open hole by explosively shooting small cylinders into the formation, capturing formation material in the cylinders.
Sidewall coring
used to evaluate possible producing zones encountered in wildcat wells. Provides fluid-flow and reservoir data
Drillstem tests (DSTs)
less expensive method than DSTs , data is considerable less quality
wireline formation testing
24 hour test period to determine wells initial productivity
Initial potential (IP) test
various logging tools measure one or more of the electrical, acoustic, or radioactive characteristics of the formations or formation fluid
Open-hole Well logs
layer of rock extending over a broad area
Formation
a device that screens drill cuttings out of drilling mud returns
Shale shaker
used to obtain an actual flow test on a potential reservoir.
Productivity test
Abrupt increase in penetration rate that could indicate porosity has been encountered.
