Chapter 7: Venipuncture Equipment Flashcards
Phlebotomy Tray contains:
collection tubes, tube holders, multisample needles, syringes, butterflies, blood transfer devices, tourniquets, alcohol pads, quaze, bandages, gloves, microcollection equipment, and sharps container
evacuated tube system
most common method, blood collected into evacuated tube, double pointed needle
needles length
1 to 1.5 inches
butterfly needle length
0.5 to 0.75 inches
needle gauge
smaller gauge bigger the needle
largest gauge needle
16 gauge
smallest gauge needle
25 gauge; used for infants; prone to hemolysis
green needle
21 gauge
black needle
22 gauge
blue needle
23 gauge
Lavender
K EDTA binds calcium to prevent clots, used for hematology
Pink
K EDTA, binds calcium
White
K EDTA binds calcium, gel separators migrate between plasma and the cells for plasma recovery
light blue
liquid sodium citrate binds calcium to prevent clots, used for coag studies, must be filled to top
Black tube
sodium citrate; used for sedimentation rates
green
sodium-, lithium-, or ammonium- heparin stops coag cascade;used for chem tests
light green tube
heparin and gel separator
Gray tube
potassium oxalate binds calcium; sodium flouride which preserves glucose, alcohol, and lactic acid concentrations
royal blue tube
special cleaned tubes; can contain clot activator or K EDTA
tan tube
used for determining lead levels
yellow tube
acid citrate dextrose (ACD); used for cellular studies; binds calcium to stop clotting
light blue/black tube
contains sodium citrate and gel gradient; separates different cells; used for molecular testing
red/green tube
contains sodium citrate, gel gradient, and sodium heparin; separates different cells; used for molecular testing
orange tube
contains a rapid clot activator for STAT testing
Red/Gray and Gold tubes
clot activator and gel separator
red tube
clot activator
order of draw
start, sterile speciments, light blue, red/gold/royal blue(serum), green, lavender/pink/white/royal blue (K EDTA), gray, yellow, finish
winged blood collection uses
hand veins. infants, or small adult veins
tourniquets
tied around patient’s arm just above venipuncture; impedes venous blood flow but not arterial blood flow; makes veins easier to locate
puncture site protection
usually 70% alcohol, for additional antiseptics iodine or chlorohexidine gluconate can be used
max time a tourniquet can be on
1 minute
