Chapter 7 Terms Flashcards
Temp
A measure of average kinetic energy in atom or molecule
Heat
A measure of thermal energy available to be transferred between two substances
Specific heat
Amount of heat energy required to raise a gram of a substance one degree celcius
Calorie
non-standard metric unit for heat energy
joule
Standard metric unit for energy
Activation energy
Minimum amount of energy required to get a reaction started
Catalyst
A substance that is used to increase the rate of the reaction. Can’t be consumed or produced
Enthalpy
A measure of the total energy available in a system
Heat of reaction
Energy that is produced or required for a chemical reaction
Exothermic reaction
Chemical reaction in which heat energy is given off.
Endothermic
Chemical reaction in which heat energy must be added to keep the reaction going
