Chapter 7 Quiz Flashcards
What is a wave?
A wave is a series of disturbances that propagates through a medium like air or empty space. (for instance, light does not need a medium, but can pass through mediums which may affect its speed).
What are the two components of a wave?
Oscillation is the up and down motion of the wave and propagation which is the wave’s length as it moves long ways.
What are the two components light is compromised of, and what abilities do these components grant light?
Light is composed of electric and magnetic waves. This allows it to travel without or with a medium.
What is wavelength?
The distance between two crests in waves.
What is Frequency?
The number of waves that pass a point per second(F)
What did Romero(1675) do in astronomy?
He timed the eclipses of Jupiter’s moons. Each moon has a known orbital period. The observed eclipse times came later(16 min) when the Earth was at the far side of the orbit.
What is the velocity of light determined by?
The medium its traveling through, or the lack thereof. Light travels slower in some mediums and faster in others.
In the Energy of Light, electromagnetic radiation has a certain amount of energy associated with it. What are its components?
E = Energy h = planck's constant
What are Atoms made up of?
Atoms are made up of three particles; Protons Electrons and Neutrons.
A Proton is ___ Charged.
Positively
An Electron is ___ Charged.
Negatively
A Neutron is ___ Charged.
Neutrally
The ___ and the ___ reside in the nucleus of an atom while ___ resides outside of the nucleus of an atom.
The Proton and Neutron reside in the nucleus of an atom, while the Electron resides outside of the nucleus of an atom.
What is an Isotope?
each of two or more forms of the same element that contain equal numbers of protons but different numbers of neutrons in their nuclei, and hence differ in relative atomic mass but not in chemical properties; in particular, a radioactive form of an element.
What is an Ion?
an atom or molecule with a net electric charge due to the loss or gain of one or more electrons.
