Chapter 6 Quiz Flashcards
A refracting telescope uses a..,
lens
A reflecting telescope uses a…
Mirror
Refraction telescopes suffer from…
distortions that cause chromatic aberrations that can be partially corrected.
A segmented telescope utilizes…
separate mirrors conjoined to make one big mirror. Size matters when it comes to telescopes.
A telescope has three components of use. What are they?
Telescopes make images brighter utilizing Light Gathering Power, Telescopes make objects more detailed utilizing what’s known as Resolving power, and telescopes make objects larger using magnification.
Light Gathering Power
The amount of light a telescope can gather. This makes the object viewed brighter, and is largely Dependant on the area of the objective. For instance, a 10-inch telescope gathers 4 times as much light as a 5-inch telescope.
Resolving Power
How much detail we can see, as well as the minimum angular distance between two objects that can be separated. This depends on the diameter of the telescope. Lens quality and atmospheric condition also plays an important roll.
What is Adaptive Optics?
Computer-controlled mirrors that can compensate for atmospheric abnormalities, and make objects viewed through telescopes much clearer.
Refraction is …
The bending of light as it passes through a translucent material.
Reflection is…
When Light bounces off an object.
