Chapter 7 pt.2 wound healing Flashcards
what are some factors that promote wound healing
- rest
- blood supply
- nutrition; proteins, amino acids, Vit.C, zinc, copper, iron
what are the phases of wound healing
Phase 1- ACUTE INFLAMMATORY REACTION
Phase 2- PROLIFERATION AND GRANULATION
Phase 3- SCAR MATURATION AND CONTRACTURE
what happens during the phase 1 wound healing? how long it lasts?
- constriction of blood vessels
- phagocytosis occurs, then scab forms
- lasts 3-4 days
what happens during phase 2 wound healing? how long it lasts?
granulation tissue is formed, closure by contracture begins
- lasts 3-4 days to 2-3 weeks
what happens during phase 3 wound healing? how long does it last?
scar tissue things and becomes paler but stronger
what factors delay healing?
- smoking
- infection
- stress
- emotional disturbances
interventions of wound healing
s/s of swelling, hematoma, seroma, redness, tearing, separation of edges
- first 24hr incision is kept covered until wound edges seal
considerations for wound dressings?
- surgeons change the first dressing
- time and date dressings and outline drainage and give the timestamp
- check every time VS taken for first 24 hrs, every 4 hour for next 24 hr, every 8hr afterwards
infection considerations of wound healing
- can occur after any procedure, more common in accidental wounds, and infected wounds
- postoperative infection develops 2-7 days after surgery
- in infected take cultures, give abx, and wound care prn
what is dehiscence ?
when wound edges separate
what is evisceration?
- wound edges separate
- loops of bowel or organs fall out (not good)
