Chapter 7: Provider God Flashcards
Anthropic Principle
Anthros = Man
The universe has characteristics that suggest it was fashioned with man in mind
Greenhouse Gas
Atmospheric gas that absorbs sunlight, thus heating the earth’s surface
Water Cycle
Continuous natural process supplying organisms with water, by evaporation from the oceans, precipitation to the earth’s surface, and flow back to the oceans
Natural Law
A regularity of the universe
Second Law of Thermodynamics
The tendency of everything in the universe to spontaneously move towards areas where that something is in lower concentration
Osmosis
The spontaneous motion of water across a semi-permeable membrane towards areas of lower concentration of water
Neutron
A large, chargeless subatomic partical usually found in the nucleus of an atom
Diffusion
Spontaneous motion of a molecule towards areas of lower concentration of that molecule
Proton
A large positively-charged subatomic partical usually found in the nucleus of an atom
Electron
A small negatively-charged subatomic partical often found orbiting the nucleus of an atom
Nucleus
A double-membrane-surounded organelle that houses the cell’s DNA
Atomic Number
The number of protons in an atom’s nucleus (Determining the properties of that atom)
Element
Atoms and ions having similar properties because they have the same number of protons
Ion
An electrically charged arrangement of proton(s) with a different number of orbiting electron(s)
Periodic Table
Tabular arrangement of elements by atomic number, which places elements with similar characteristics in the same column
Electron Shell
A region of space around an atomic nuleus where electons might orbit the nuleus
Compound
A combination of elemetns that exhibits properties different from the component elements
Covalent Bond
A strong attraction between atoms caused by sharing electrons
Ionic Bond
The Bond of Ions
An attraction between oppositely-charged ions
Ionic Compound
A compound composed of ions bound together by ionic bonds
Hydrogen Bond
A weak attraction between slight electrical charges on molecules
Specific Heat
Heat required to raise the temperature of 1 gram of a substance 1 degree C
Sovent
A substance into which other substances dissolve.
Types of solvents: polar solvent dissolves polar substances; non-polar sovlent dissolves non-polar substances
Polar Substance
A substance with electrical charges ( vs. non-polar substance)
Heat of Vaporization
The heat required to evaporate 1 gram of a liquid that is already at its boiling point
Fossil Fuels
Fuels like coal, oil, and natural gas which are made of fossils of dead organisms
Global Warming
The rise of Earth’s surface temperature due to greenhouse gas increase (Especially CO2)
