Chapter 10: God is Three Flashcards
Biodiversity
The number of taxa (Usually species)
Climate
The average temperature and rainfall at a given location
Biome
Flora and fauna found in a particular climate and across a large area of the earth’s surface
Rainforest
A forest land biome designed for the wetter part of the earth’s tropical zone
Savannah
A grass land biome designed for the dryer part of the earth’s tropical zone
Desert
A land biome designed for the earth’s arid zones
Temperate Grasslands
Grass land biome designed for the dryer part of the earth’s temperate zone
Temperate Deciduous Forest
Forest land biome found in the wetter part of the earth’s temperate zone
Deciduous
When a tree drops its leaves at a certain point in the year and then regrows them at another
Coniferous Forest
Forest land biome found between the temperate and polar zones of the earth
Tundra
Biome found in the earth’s polar zone
Groundwater
Water that flows underground on its way to the ocean
Coral Reef
High diversity, low latitude marine biome living in limestone structures built by organisms
Niche
Role of an organism in a biological community
Estuary
Ocean outlet of river where water saltiness transistions from fresh to marine
Trophical Structure
The flow of energy through a community
From producers through comsumers
Producer
An organism that gets its energy from the physical enviroment
Consumer
An organism that gets its energy by consuming organic molecules
Decomposer
An organism that gets its energy from breaking down dead organisms and recycling the molecules so they can be used again in the community
Tier
Vertical zone of a forest characterized by a unique flora and fauna
Habitat
Space in a biological community in which species can thrive
Resource Partitioning
Division of a biolgical community’s resources among different organisms
Disparity
Measure of how different organisms are when compared with one another
Endangered Species
A species whose population is declining at a rate that puts the species at risk
Conservation Biology
Discipline of biology that seeks to preserve organisms and biological communities
Sustainable Development
Preserving biological communites as we transform the enviroment
Threatened Species
A species that is likely to become endangered in the near future
Biodiversity Hot Spot
A region that, if altered, would result in the greatest extinction of organisms
Reproductive Cloning
Producing from one organism, another organism with identical DNA
Identical Twins
Two people with identical DNA; arise from embryo cells separated soon after fertilization
