Mood
Positive or negative emotional state varying in intensity, responding to life circumstances
Feelings
Self-reported and expressed inner emotional states
Emotion
Person’s attempt to manage relationships with changing circumstances
Depressive disorders
Affects 13% of 12-17 year olds in the US
- Higher rates in females (2:1 ratio)
- Risk factors: genetics, low socioeconomic status, stress, peers, cultural factors
Bipolar and related disorders
- Manic episodes: abnormally elevated mood with increased goal-directed activity
- Must persist for minimum 1 week or require hospitalization
Cyclothymic disorder
Alternating hypomanic and depressive symptoms over 2 years
Dual inheritance theory
Shame
Negative self-perceptions and evaluative statements of self-worth or perceptions of being evaluated by others
Guilt
Intense feelings of having transgressed ones own standards
Bipolar
A mood disorder characterized by episodes of mania (high energy and mood) and depression.
Interpersonal theories of depression
Theories suggesting that depression can result from difficulties in personal relationships, such as lack of social support or unresolved conflicts.
Dysphoria
A state of unease or generalized dissatisfaction, often present in mood disorders.
Rejection sensitivity
A tendency to anxiously expect, perceive, and overreact to rejection, commonly seen in some mood and personality disorders.
Peripartum onset
Depression that occurs during pregnancy or shortly after childbirth.
Persistent depressive disorder
A chronic form of depression with less severe but long-lasting symptoms than MDD. (dysthymic disorder)
