A
an international agreement linked to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change ;
aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions globally

originally adopted in Kyoto , Japan on 11th december 1997

when did it come to effect and how many signatories / parties involved?
A
- came to effect on 16th February 2005
* in spring 2010, there were 84 signatories and 190 parties to the Kyoto Protocol

what were the targets set for the 37 industrialised countries and the European Community?
A
- to reduce emissions of the 4 greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide + sulphur hexafluoride)
- the countries agreed to reduce their greenhouse emissions to at least 55% below 1990 levels (emissions from air travel + international shipping not included )

what were the 5 key principles established?
A
- the commitment to reduce the gases was legally binding
- countries had to prepare polices to reduce them
- a fund for climate change would be set up
- reports/ reviews of the protocol would be carried out
- a committee would be established to ensure the protocol is being complied with
