chapter 1 (manyfactured boards) Flashcards

1
Q

4 advantages of manufactured boards

A
  • available in large, flat sheets (so used for large pieces of furniture )
  • good dimensional stability
  • can be decorated in a number of ways (paint/ veneers)
  • waste from wood production used in making MDF, chipboard and hardboard

Q

5 disadvantages of manufactured boards

A
  • sharp tools required when cutting as tools are easily blunted
  • thin sheets don’t stay flat and will blow unless supported
  • difficult to join with traditional construction methods e.g. finger/ dovetail joints
  • cutting &sanding some can generate hazardous dust particles
  • edges must be treated &i covered to hide ‘ugly’ edges & stop water writing in

Q

PLYWOOD; aesthetics (3 points)

A
  • made of veneers normally 1.5mm thick
  • grain of each layer at right angles to layer either side of it + there’s an odd number so the 2 outside layers run in same direction
  • birch veneers usually used on outside layers so attractive surface
