chapter 1 (manyfactured boards) Flashcards
4 advantages of manufactured boards
- available in large, flat sheets (so used for large pieces of furniture )
- good dimensional stability
- can be decorated in a number of ways (paint/ veneers)
- waste from wood production used in making MDF, chipboard and hardboard
5 disadvantages of manufactured boards
- sharp tools required when cutting as tools are easily blunted
- thin sheets don’t stay flat and will blow unless supported
- difficult to join with traditional construction methods e.g. finger/ dovetail joints
- cutting &sanding some can generate hazardous dust particles
- edges must be treated &i covered to hide ‘ugly’ edges & stop water writing in
PLYWOOD; aesthetics (3 points)
- made of veneers normally 1.5mm thick
- grain of each layer at right angles to layer either side of it + there’s an odd number so the 2 outside layers run in same direction
- birch veneers usually used on outside layers so attractive surface
PLYWOOD; properties (2 points)
- strong in all directions
* resistant to splitting as layers are in alternate angles
PLYWOOD ; uses (4 points)
- boat building (exterior quality plywood)
- drawer + wardrobe bottoms
- tea chests
- cheaper grades used in construction industry for holdings + shuttering
PLYWOOD ; advantages (3 points)
- available in large sheets
- thicker sheets don’t warp/ twist
- thick sections can be laminated to make 2D shapes
PLYWOOD; disadvantages (1 point)
•thin sheets very flexible and will warp if not correctly stacked/ supported
CHIPBOARD; aesthetics (2 points)
- no grain patterns
* surface often veneered/ covered with plastic laminate
CHIPBOARD; properties (3 points)
- made from waste products bonded together w/ string resins
- strong in all directions though not as strong as plywood
- not very resistant to water but moisture resistant grades available
CHIPBOARD; uses (4 points)
- large floor boards & decking for loft spaces
- shelving
- kitchen worktops
- flat-packed furniture
CHIPBOARDS; advantages (1 point)
•makes good use of waste materials that are chipped up
CHIPBOARDS; disadvantages (2 points)
- not very good around water as it’ll just soak it up
* will chip and flake on edges if not protected
MEDIUM DENSITY FIBREBOARD (MDF); aesthetics (1 point)
•excellent surface finish (can be veneered or painted)
MEDIUM DENSITY FIBREBOARD (MDF); properties (3points)
- very dense
- stable and not affected by changing humidity levels
- will break down & absorb water if gets wet
MEDIUM DENSITY FIBRE BOARD(MDF); uses (4 points)
- flat packed furniture
- drawer bottoms
- kitchen units
- heat & sound insulation
