Chapter 7- Gaseous exchange and transport Flashcards
Define gaseous exchange?
Exchange of oxygen, carbon dioxide and nutrients between an organism/cells and the environment.
Define countercurrent exchange system
When the blood flow is opposite to water flow, maintaining a steep concentration gradient.
Define tidal volume
The volume of air moved in and out of the lungs at each resting breath.
Define vital capacity
Maximum volume of air that can be breathed in and out
Define residual volume
Volume of air that cannot be removed from the lungs/ the volume of air left in the lungs after the deepest possible exhalation.
Define inspiratory reserve volume
Maximum volume of air that can be breathed in over and above a normal inhalation.
Define expiratory reserve volume
Extra amount of air you can force out of your lungs over and above the normal tidal volume of air you breathe out.
Define ventilation rate
Volume of air that moves in and out in one minute.
