Chapter 7 - Energy Flashcards
What is Work?
Work is the effort exerted on something that causes a change in its energy. It is a change in KE.
What is the equation for Work?
Work (J) = force (f) x distance (d).
What is the unit for Work?
Joules (J), which are N x m.
What is Power?
Power is the measure of how fast work is being done.
What is the equation for Power?
Power (W) = work done (J)/time interval (t)
What is the unit for Power?
Watts (W).
What is Potential Energy?
Potential energy is stored energy that has the potential to do work.
What is Gravitational Potential Energy?
Gravitational potential energy is PE at elevated positions.
What is the equation for Potential Energy?
PE = weight (mg) x height (h).
g = 10 m/s^2
What is the equation for Kinetic Energy?
KE = 1/2 mass (m) x velocity (v)^2
What is the Work-Energy Theorem?
The Work-Energy Theorem states that work is the change in Kinetic Energy.
What is the Conservation of Energy?
Energy can not be created nor destroyed, but it CAN be transferred.
What is a Machine?
A machine is a device that multiples force or changes the direction of force.
What is the relationship between work input & work output? Why?
They are equal to each other because energy (J) is never created nor destroyed.
Can a machine multiple energy?
NO!!
