Chapter 14 - Gases Flashcards
How much of the atmosphere is below 5.6 km?
50% of the atmosphere.
What are three fluids?
Liquids, gases, & plasma.
What is a Vacuum?
A vacuum is a condition of nothingness. There are no forces to act upon anything.
Why do we not feel the weight of air?
We don’t feel air’s weight because we are surrounded by it.
What is the weather like at high pressures?
Cold weather & clear skies.
What is the weather like at low pressures?
Warm weather & rain/storms.
Where is the density of air greatest?
Air’s density is greatest at Earth’s surface.
How to find the Volume of Air?
Volume of air = area x height.
What is a Barometer?
A barometer measures the pressure exerted by air (atmospheric pressure).
What is the maximum height that water can be lifted?
10.3 m.
What is Boyle’s Law?
Pressure is proportional to density.
Pressure is inversely proportional to volume. (P ~ 1/V)
What is Bernoulli’s Principle?
Where the speed of a fluid increases, internal pressure in the fluid decreases.
What is the relationship between a fluid’s speed and narrow regions? Pressure?
Fluids will speed up in narrower regions. There will be less pressure in narrower regions.
What is Plasma? Give an example.
Plasma is an electrified gas.
Ex. Fluorescent lights!
What is most matter in the universe?
Plasma!
